Reuben smith's tumblehome boatshop is focused on the high‐end restoration and new construction of historic and classic wooden boats.. These are 29' keel boats designed in the early 1920's. they have fully restored two of them (featured in woodenboat a while back) and are finishing up a third right now. i think the most beautiful boat in the shop was a totally restored 1916 fay and bowen torpedo sterned launch. they have two large buildings.. The plans and building notes show how to build the boat with or without the tumblehome if the builder prefer straight sides. the boat is too small to be fitted with a self bailing sole but she can be made unsinkable with the addition of buoyancy foam..

One of the advantages of tumblehome is that the center of gravity is lower than in a design where the maximum beam is at the deck. this, of course, is assuming the depths are similar. tumblehome also has a more even stability curve. the early radical "dish boats" of the ior formula had the problem of floating upside down.. I met scott at the 2013 bainbridge island wooden boat festival while he was relaxing on the beautiful 42′ double ended sloop – tumblehome – he designed and built. we had a great time talking shop and i learned what a rotating wing spar is :)..
